In this issue, we are featuring Arizonans for Children.

A foster child struggles with memories of her past. She recalls a white fluff of a pup she had at her home when she was starting kindergarten. Instantly, she closes her eyes and wonders if that pup ever stopped chewing on the corner of her favorite baby blanket.

Restoring these memories for foster children is vital to their well being. It serves as a connection from their past to the present. Arizonans for Children is looking for volunteers to help restore those memories for these children by getting involved with the Life Book Program.

Arizonans for Children is a nonprofit organization that exists to facilitate opportunities, and provide effective solutions, that alleviate hardships and improve the fragile lives of the abused, abandoned, and neglected children in foster care.

Life Book volunteers research a child's life and find those important missing pieces that help the child connect where he or she came from to the present. The Life Book program trains volunteers to find pictures and stories and assemble a timeline for children who have moved from home, to shelter, to multiple foster placements.

Since the inception of the Life Book program, many life books have been created and gifted to foster children. In 2010, nine recipients will receive lost artwork, messages from favorite school teachers, and images of their former foster placements. Volunteers receive training to become part of a creative research team and have the full support of the program director. Scrapbook materials are abundantly available.

Volunteers need to pass a background check, refer to training resources, and make contacts with individuals connected to their child. We ask for a two-hour a week commitment over nine months to create a scrapbook for a foster child.
