Welcome!
Have you noticed that sometimes the best way to teach something is by using a story, whether that is a skill, a lesson, or a value? For those who think stories are simply entertainment devices, may I suggest otherwise? Stories speak directly to our brains. They teach us what to pursue, and what to avoid. They are contextual, emotionally attractive deliverers of the important information we need to live and work well. And they work in situations we might not immediately consider . . . like interpersonal communication snafus. Because I train in both these areas -- story performance and interpersonal communication -- I've noticed the overlap. In this issue's video, I share a few ideas on how stories help us communicate important information in ways that other forms of communication can't or don't. Hope you enjoy! |

Creativity Tip: Stories as communication tools for everything you need to say
Stories are such a pervasive part of our day-to-day lives we don't even notice them most of the time. Do you agree? Thinking about what I wanted to convey to you in the issue, I had to recall the last time I used a story to communicate a value, for instance. It's not that I don't do it all the time. It's that it's such a normal part of my day, I don't even notice it. My guess is you might find the same thing to be true for you.
In this video, I share an example of how we use stories to communicate our values, for instance. I invite you to pay attention to how often you use stories in your daily interactions. I bet you will surprise yourself!

Tell Your Story! How do you serve? Do you know an organization or person you'd like to acknowledge? Email me here. In this issue, we're focusing on the Arizona Department of Housing.
Arizona Department of Housing Helps Struggling Home Owners
Save Our Home AZ is a program of the Arizona Department of Housing through the United States Department of Treasury. This $267 million program assists struggling Arizona homeowners stave off foreclosure.
While still in its infancy, what started as a program focused on principal mortgage reduction has since added several other components including unemployment/underemployment assistance, second mortgage settlement, reinstatement assistance and short sale assistance. To date, the program has assisted more than 600 Arizona families.
One of those families is a west Phoenix couple from Maryvale. Due to a slowdown in the home construction industry, the husband had been out of work for nearly two years and they were struggling to make their $850 monthly mortgage payment. After receiving a Save Our Home AZ postcard in the mail, the couple applied for help and within weeks they were receiving $700 per month in assistance to avoid foreclosure.
The Arizona Department of Housing (ADOH) provides programs and critical resources to the most vulnerable populations of the state while serving as the driver for economic development and leveraging private capital.
Whether it is through its work to provide safe and affordable housing, assistance to help aid the homeless and special needs populations, or its ongoing efforts to prevent Arizonans from losing their homes, ADOH remains fully committed to finding responsible and reasonable solutions to counter the housing crisis facing the state.
Last year, ADOH made combined commitments of more than $223 million in assistance available to support housing, community development activities, and foreclosure prevention initiatives. These resources have assisted more than 260,000 Arizona households in 15 counties.
In the coming months, there will be more changes to the Save Our Home AZ program that will allow ADOH to assist even more struggling Arizona homeowners. For additional information, please visit www.azhousing.gov or call the ARIZONA FORECLOSURE HELP-LINE at 1-877-448-1211. |
