Tell Your Story!

How do you serve? Do you know an organization or person you'd like to acknowledge? Email me here. In this issue, we are focusing on Breon Michel, trainer, speaker, coach.
Seeing With New Eyes

There are those people you can't help but admire. Breon Michel is one of them.

I've come to know Breon through coaching her in her stories. Breon stands out for me because she is an intelligent, engaging young woman who speaks to young people on how to deal with stress and make positive choices.

One of the stories we worked on was how she coped with her parents' divorce. Her family lived in the countryside of Iowa at the time. She and her older sister, Amber, were in elementary school and had the run of the place. They did the kinds of things we mostly read about -- built log bridges to get across the creek and caught fireflies. Sounds pretty idyllic, doesn't it? That part, yes. But, her parents were not getting along and they separated. If that wasn't hard enough, her mother chose to move away.

"One morning, my sister and I watched my mom get into the car and drive away," said Breon. "I remember feeling profoundly sad as I said goodbye."

Then, she had to get dressed and go to school.

Years later, in high school, this loss started to catch up with her. She was drinking, partying and breaking curfew. But, perhaps most telling, she didn't try out for basketball -- something she loved. She was full of self-doubt and didn't know why.

Fortunately, her former coach pulled her aside one day and asked her if she was okay. That got her thinking, "Am I okay?" And the answer was, no. It was like a light bulb went on. She had her ah ha moment. She realized, then and there, she had a choice to either get better, or give up. She decided to get better.

She reached out for support from teachers, trusted friends and mentors. She started to see that this wasn't about her, and that she had choices. She could still have a good life. She quit partying and tried out for the team and made it. Her grades improved. She was on the mend. Today, she has her master's degree in positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and not only works with young people, but also with soldiers to develop resiliency.

"When my mom left that day, I was filled with sadness, anger and guilt," said Breon. "Fortunately, I came to realize this would not last forever. This is what I share with young people. You don't have to be a victim. You aren't powerless. Things can get better. In fact, today, my relationship with my mom is wonderful and my dad is one of my best friends."

Breon Michel is a wonderful example of how we can look at problems with new eyes and things can get better. She's helping others see this as well. If you'd like to know more about Breon, you can find her at http://www.breonmichel.com.
