ICAN invests in future of youth
By Laurie Fagen

With no parents in his life, 16-year-old Nikko lived with relatives, many of whom were gang members. Life felt hopeless for him.

By age 9, Michael had already seen his three older brothers go to prison for drugs and gang violence. He lives with his family in a one-bedroom apartment in a neighborhood riddled with drugs and gang activity.

Argentina was just a child when her older brother was killed in a senseless shooting. She was alone and unable to make sense of this tragedy.

These are real children who live in the Valley of the Sun -- Phoenix, Ariz. Instead of becoming statistics, they have become success stories, thanks to ICAN, a Chandler nonprofit that offers high-quality, out-of-school-time programs for youth at risk. ICAN provides programs to empower youth ages five to 18 years old to be productive, self-confident and responsible citizens. ICAN offers equal access and free programs to every kid who wants to participate - programs that are proven effective at preventing substance abuse, gang activity and other delinquency among youth, building social and academic success.

Today, Nikko helps younger children with basketball or homework and is employed as a youth trainee, helping out financially at home with his grandmother.

Michael is learning to blend life skills with his interest in sports and computers, and dreams of enrolling in the Chandler Police Department's Explorer program in a few years.

Argentina, now 25, was crowned Miss Latino Arizona, graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and is currently working at a local hospital while pursuing her Masters Degree.
