Tell Your Story! How do you serve? Do you know an organization or person you'd like to acknowledge? Email me here. In this issue, we are focusing on the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, SAARC. This is Jeri's story-- the one I talk about in the video -- in its entirety. I have included the pitch for funds. I wanted you to see how the pitch is incorporated, just for your information. Eric's Story: Beneficial Beans Entrepreneur By Jeri Kendle, President, SAARC
Imagine a bright, capable 28-year-old man who spends most of his time in front of the computer creating amazing works of art, and yet struggles with a simple hello. He has a childlike innocence and the eyes of an old soul, but he lives at home with his parents, has no friends, no paycheck, and has never been able to make it past the first interview. Meet Eric . . . Eric has autism.
He isn't alone. Arizona has one of the highest rates of autism in the country...1:100!
Children with autism get a lot of attention, and there are many programs to help them. But children with autism all have one thing in common . . . they become adults with autism.
The unemployment rate for these adults is over 90 percent. They want to work. They're able to work, but like Eric, they don't know where to start. And, every year that goes by, they regress, lose skills and lose hope.
But there is hope. SARRC has become one of the national leaders by developing unique, groundbreaking programs for clients like Eric, and we have found competitive employment for more than 65 percent of our clients
We are doing this by thinking like entrepreneurs.
In 2010, we launched Beneficial Beans. We are trademarked, have our infrastructure, and a business model that is working. Watch out Starbucks! You can buy our beans in local retail shops, on our website, and soon, through Amazon. Walmart has made a commitment in eight of their local stores, and Outback Steakhouses already brews our coffee. In March we will open our first Beneficial Beans Cafe in Scottsdale!
We are now poised to grow our beans into something extraordinary. This is where you come in. Today we are asking you to think beyond your morning grande and invest in coffee that has a purpose. We need $160,000 to fund packaging, equipment and training to grow our model into one that will be replicated across the country.
Remember Eric? He is our first employee. Eric has discovered his true passion -- photography -- that he is now selling through cards and calendars. We didn't create a barista - Eric is an entrepreneur!
Eric's fortunate. Most of our adults are in a free fall. You can change that. Join us. Let's change the world with a simple cup of coffee.
You can find more information about SAARC at autismcenter.org.
